Interview with Jenn Smira, Compass DC Real Estate Expert

This week, we’re sitting down with our fearless leader, Jenn Smira, to get her take on everything — from the market to dream homes, and so much more.

What first sparked your interest in real estate? Is there a specific moment when you knew you’d found your passion?:

I first started my career in technology, but deep down, I think I always knew that real estate was where I was meant to be. Once I made the switch, it felt so right from day one—and I’ve never looked back since!

Where do you think the real estate market is trending next?:

As home prices continue to rise, inventory will remain low. What does that mean? The best homes are going to get snatched up fast—and you can expect to face serious competition when you do decide you’re ready to buy. Sellers, on the other hand, can expect to see significant demand when placing their home on the market—and likely, a nice profit to go along with it.

What’s the best real estate advice that you give your clients?:

When buying, don’t rush or put pressure on yourself. I promise: There is always another house, and we’ll find it. When selling, it’s a numbers game. That’s where I come in, by getting people through your front door. My team achieves this through sleek marketing, strategic positioning, and constant analysis of what’s working and what’s not—from the price, to the photos, copy, and beyond. In short, we’re in the business of selling listings, not collecting them.

What are the hottest areas in the Capital Region right now?:

Chevy Chase, where properties are being scooped up faster than ever with multiple offers to show for it. Beyond Chevy Chase, we’re also continuing to see buyers flock all over upper NW DC as they seek the blend of suburban and urban life it offers. Meanwhile, closer to downtown, the market activity in Capitol Hill is in high demand.

How have people’s real estate aspirations changed since the start of the pandemic, especially since they’re spending so much time at home?:

Now, more than ever, our clients know exactly what they want—down to an exact checklist. Buyers have never been more decisive; if a home doesn’t fit their exact criteria, they won’t even bother looking. It’s also clear that people are looking to spend more time at home, which is why they’re investing in it accordingly to create their perfect oasis—whether that means building a pool, pickleball court, home office, or whatever else they can dream up!

Tell us about your own dream home!:

My dream home is in Casey Key, Florida, right on the beach with a tennis/pickleball court, basketball court, pool, wine cellar, and boat dock. And of course, a guest house for my friends and clients to stay!
