As far as we’re concerned, there’s not much that could possibly top watching the city’s annual fireworks display against the iconic backdrop of the National Mall. Of course, this year’s celebration comes with a few twists. As Washington, DC helps commemorate America’s 250th birthday, several longstanding Fourth of July traditions are getting a refresh, from a new parade route to changes unfolding along the National Mall itself. But don’t worry. The fireworks, patriotic spirit, and packed lineup of events are all very much intact.

July Fourth at the National Archives | July 4

There’s no better place to celebrate Independence Day than at the home of the Declaration of Independence itself. Starting at 8:30 AM, visitors can enjoy family-friendly activities, live music, historical reenactors, and the annual public reading of the Declaration before exploring the National Archives’ iconic exhibits.

National Independence Day Parade | July 4

Beginning at 10:30 AM, one of the country’s largest Independence Day parades winds through downtown Washington, DC. Expect marching bands, military units, giant balloons, equestrian groups, and festive floats celebrating America’s birthday.

Great American State Fair | Through July 10

Taking over the National Mall through July 10, the Great American State Fair brings together attractions, entertainment, and themed programming celebrating states and territories from across the country. Visitors can browse exhibits, ride a Ferris wheel, and enjoy a special Independence Day rodeo on July 4.

Fireworks & Salute to America | July 4

Fourth at The Wharf | July 4

Celebrate Independence Day on the waterfront with live country music, outdoor games, food and drinks, and views of the city. The festivities run from 5 to 9 PM, wrapping up just in time for fireworks across the National Mall.

Palisades Fourth of July Parade & Picnic | July 4

One of DC’s most charming traditions returns for its 60th year. The parade begins at 11 AM, followed by a community picnic featuring food, family activities, and plenty of small-town spirit in the heart of Northwest DC.

Elbridge Gerry Commemoration at Congressional Cemetery | July 4

History buffs can celebrate the holiday with a patriotic ceremony honoring Elbridge Gerry, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and former vice president. The event includes remarks, wreath laying, and guided tours highlighting Revolutionary War history.
