Where To Soak Up The Last Drops of Summer In DC

Lifestyle

School is starting, the sun is setting earlier, and the truth is undeniable: The last days of summer are upon us. But even if you haven’t yet crossed everything off your summer bucket list, not to fear — there’s still time!

Here’s where you’ll find us soaking up the last drops of summer in the District; we suggest you do the same!

#1 Where To Brunch

Lucy Bar: This airy, laid-back bar known for frozen patio pounders and hot pizza starts weekends off with tuna-studded deviled eggs, Virginia oysters, and pizzas glistening with eggy toppings. Try a pie with silky carbonara flavors, or one with a spin on the classic American breakfast combo that includes sausage and tiny quail eggs.

MI VIDA: The latest craze to hit 14th Street, this Wharf-born brand brings its new neighborhood banana custard French toast topped with piloncillo syrup and candied pecans, breakfast burritos, and chilaquiles with scrambled eggs, ham, and a smoky tomatillo sauce. There’s also family-style options and tequila-infused bloody marys and coffee cocktails.

Smoke & Mirrors: The scenic rooftop bar atop the AC Hotel Washington DC Capitol Hill Navy Yard recently unveiled brunch service in August (Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Executive chef Angela Rose debuts a weekend menu full of D.C. favorites like a half-smoke and eggs with breakfast potatoes and garlic aioli and mumbo-glazed wings, plus pork belly and biscuits and a foie butter “FB&J” tartine.

#2 Where To Enjoy A Night On The Town

Service Bar: This newly-crowned World’s 50 Best bar in Shaw pours out an assortment of beverages from happy hour until late, along with flavorful takes on fried chicken that last til the clock strikes midnight. Liquid standouts from the U Street NW mainstay include pisco punch, al pastor margarita, and a frothy espresso martini.

Morris: Mere steps from the convention center sits Morris American Bar, a pastel paradise that draws inspiration from Wes Anderson’s 2014 picture The Grand Budapest Hotel. Diners can enjoy shareables like deviled eggs and cheese pizza while sipping on beers, summertime tiki drinks served in colorful glassware, and spirit-free choices.

Allegory: Find this whimsical, no-reservations cocktail lair behind a wall of books off Eaton hotel’s lobby. The bar has lots of tricks up its sleeve, from clarified cocktails featuring floating bubbles to birthday shots served with sparklers. Further amplifying its mystical allure, Allegory was ahead of the caviar curve with its ever-popular “Caviback” offering with vodka and a single Pringle.

#3 Where To Sip And See

Betsy: From the team that brought you the beloved Belga Cafe comes Betsy, a charming rooftop oasis that was practically curated for Instagram. This summer, indulge in spritzy cocktails that utilize gin (which serves as the house spirit of choice and makes up the bulk of the menu).

Lady Bird: This Dupont Circle rooftop bar offers its revelers a beautiful view of the White House — but the airy space is absolutely beautiful in its own right with a U-shaped bar that serves as the centerpiece and a mural by local artist Meg Biram. The indoor and outdoor space lets you soak up or escape the sun just as you’d like, and the seasonal, vegetable-forward menu (as well as the craft cocktails) also has something for everyone.

El Techo: With 1,100 square feet of space decorated in bright colors and lush greenery, there are plenty of ways to pay homage to warm weather at El Techo right now. Beyond the vibrant summer cocktail menu, great happy hour, and beloved tacos/burritos, the bar also offers rooftop yoga classes (when seasonally appropriate, of course) and live music.

#4 Where To Catch A Wave

Sandy Point State Park: The 786-acre park has long been a summer day trip destination for DMV residents seeking to beat the heat without crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The summer entrance fee is $4 per person during the week and $5 on holidays and weekends. The calm waters of the Chesapeake Bay make it a good swimming spot while the pavilions make it ideal for picnicking. Landlubbers can hike the trails through the pine forest and marshes where they can spot birds and other wildlife.

Colonial Beach: Located within a 90-minute drive south of DC, Colonial Beach boasts Virginia’s second-largest beach front along Virginia’s Northern Neck peninsula. Visitors can enjoy swimming and fishing at the beaches or break out the boat and kayak. Explore the area’s many historical attractions by golf cart, which can be rented and legally driven around the town.

Assateague: The National Park Service oversees this 37-mile island in Virginia and Maryland, where wild ponies that roam the beaches and salt marshes are the main attractions. Guests can hike, bike, swim, and kayak on Assateague’s beaches and trails while gazing at the beautiful wildlife like ponies, shorebirds, and other animals.

#5 Where To Root For The Home Team

Nationals Park: Summertime in DC is simply not complete without heading to Nationals Park at least once for a sunny day spent watching a ballgame with friends. Make a day of it by heading to The Bullpen before for a cold pint, and strolling over to The Wharf for a postgame dinner washed down with waterfront views.
