#1 Root For The Home Team: The silver lining of January? With the winter season comes incredible indoor sports action in the District. The NHL’s Washington Capitals and the NBA’s Washington Wizards play their exciting games inside Capital One Arena, while the Capital City Go-Go, part of the NBA’s developmental G-League, take to the court inside Entertainment & Sports Arena.
#2 Catch Up With Shakespeare: Did you know that Shakespeare didn’t only dabble in tragedy? This month, you can see for yourself by experiencing one of his greatest romantic comedies, As You Like It, at Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Harman Hall. Set in the 1960s that gave rise to flower power, the play follows Rosalind, who is banished from her home and ends up in an “alternative community” where possibilities are endless. The Bard’s verse and the music of The Beatles are woven together to create a production you won’t soon forget!

#3 Visit An Iconic Exhibit: Defined as the years between 1450-1800, the early modern period saw transformation across the world – both violent and otherwise. In that vast exchange of people, culture, objects, and ideas, Latin America’s architecture became a synergy of Indigenous and cultural traditions. The National Gallery of Art’s Library displays more than 30 pieces as proof this season, including wonders such as Mexico City’s Metropolitan Cathedral and Guatemala’s temples of Tikal.
#4 Stand-Up With Seth Meyers: As the current occupant of one of the most coveted jobs in comedy, Seth Meyers is undeniably a household name. As such, it’s rare to have the chance to see such a great talent debut new stand-up material, but Meyers will do just do that across two nights of performances at the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater on January 12th and 13th. In addition to his great work on Late Night with Seth Meyers, the multifaceted performer also wrote and starred on Saturday Night Live and is a New York Times bestselling author.
#5 Celebrate MLK Day: DC honors the late, great Martin Luther King, Jr. with this annual parade that brings the entire community together on the holiday that celebrates the Civil Rights leader and all he did to enact change. Community activists, performers, and civic leaders will all be on-hand for the gathering that aims to prolong Dr. King’s legacy and everlasting message of peace.
#6 Dig Into Restaurant Week: From January 15th-21st, The Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington’s signature celebration returns and is ready to heat up your January in style. Enjoy winter in the District while taking advantage of specially priced meals, including to-go options and cocktail & wine pairings.

Washington Convention Center from January 19th-28th. Interactive displays and on-site activations only add to the fascination of this motor vehicle showcase.
#8 Discover Works By Mark Rothko: Known for his abstract paintings on canvas (some of which can be seen at the Phillips Collection in DC!), Mark Rothko also crafted more than 1,000 paintings on paper over the course of his illustrious, decades-long career. This season, the National Gallery of Art will showcase more than 100 of these tableaus — many of which will be on view to the public for the first time — making for a unique opportunity to see new work from one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
