School is back in session, which means it’s time for families all over the DMV to decide on the post-class programming that’s best for their child and family. Not sure where to start?

From sporting engagements to artistic outlets and homework support, here’s our timely round-up of the best (and most cost-effective) after-school activities around the DC region today.

#1 DCPS Out of School Time After-School Programs

DCPS Out of School Time (OSTP)’s free after-school programs engage students in grades PK3 – 8 (depending on the site) in academic support, a free dinner or snack, and a variety of enrichment activities provided by DCPS teachers, paraprofessionals, and partner organizations at 55 DC schools. The program is made possible by funding from DCPS and a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant.

#2 After-School All-Stars DC

After-School All-Stars provides year-round free, comprehensive programs and support services for students and their families. In 2023, their programs served 150,689 students living in high-poverty communities. 91% of ASAS students are youth of color and 90% qualify for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program.

#3 City Of Rockville And Parks Department After-School Programs

The Recreation and Parks Department has a variety of affordable, high-quality after school programs for students in grades K-10. Each program has well-trained staff that plans a fun and active program including snack, homework help, and more to round out the day.

#4 Old Firehouse After-School Program

Old Firehouse Center (OFC) is a dedicated space for Fairfax County teens. Offering game tables and a dance floor, OFC provides after-school care, summer programs for kid, and personal development opportunities for McLean, Virginia’s teens. OFC encourages the pursuit of lifelong passions and prepares teens for the realities of the real world.

#5 FBR Club @THEARC

Since its opening in 2015, the FBR Clubhouse provides quality youth development programming to children living in Ward 8, offering a wide range of activities to engage students in the community. Members have access to the Clubhouse everyday after school, on most Saturdays, and all summer long at camp. Club membership provides a positive, fun, and safe place for youth to thrive. The yearly membership fee is $50 per year, per child, however no child will ever be turned away for the inability to pay.

#6 Boys & Girls Clubs Of Greater Washington Germantown Club After-School Care

Since October 18, 2002, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington (BGCGW) Germantown Club has been providing quality before-and-after-school programs, as well as summer camp programs, for the youths of the Germantown, Gaithersburg, and Clarksburg community. They serve over 550 youths throughout the year, with an average daily attendance of 120 club members.

BeGreatDC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to empower, educate, and engage the community. Their programs fall under three pillars: community connection, youth education, and wellness.
