Getting The Most Out Of Summer’s Last Days

Lifestyle

I’ll be the first to admit that this hasn’t exactly been a typical DC summer.

But, then again, 2020 itself has been anything but ordinary. Even as we all continue to adapt to the realities of our new reality together, though, there’s always a silver lining to be found.

Over the past few months, I’ve ventured near and (not exactly) far, embraced seasonal traditions, and seen first-hand how the spirit of our city is very much alive. And even though the summer is winding down, there’s still time to get the most out of its precious last drops.

It isn’t over until it’s over, right? So, from the hottest open-air spots nearby, to the coolest destinations just outside of the city, and the seasonal inspiration worth bringing home, here is your 2020 end-of-summer bucket list.

Close To Home:

Luckily, there’s one thing us Washingtonians can always count on: that a good rooftop or patio will never go out of style. As restaurants and bars reopened this summer, we welcomed some newcomers to the alfresco scene. But in truth? With the springtime hiatus from outdoor dining, even your tried-and-true favorites are just waiting to be rediscovered.

Newcomers:

#1 Albi and Maxwell Park: Navy Yard’s latest Mediterranean addition where guests can lounge on the patio while savoring an extensive wine list from Maxwell Park somm Brent Kroll.

#2 Picnic at the Lane: Ivy City’s expansive “social club” has relaunched as a family-friendly beer garden with local brews, wine, hard seltzer, and picnic-style fare.

#3 The Bethesda Streetery: An outdoor dining area and downtown hangout courtesy of the Bethesda Urban Partnership, open to anyone who orders takeout from a restaurant in the neighborhood.

Mainstays:

#1 Bardo: Navy Yard’s expansive waterfront beer garden that holds 750 outdoor seats, so you’ll have plenty of room to social distance in style.

#2 Biergarten Haus: The longtime H Street beer garden is back in action with German brews and brats to spare.

#3 Officina: Nick Stefanelli’s rooftop has reopened at the Wharf with a new “Alice in Wonderland” theme where Italian-inspired spritzes reign.

Daytime Excursions:

Craving some wide-open spaces? No problem. From vineyards to hiking trails, the only thing between you and nature is a short (and scenic) car ride.

Vineyards:

#1 Boxwood Estates: This Middleburg vineyard is home to exquisite Bordeaux-style blends, a beautiful barrel room, and a state-of-the-art production facility.

#2 Chrysalis Vineyards: Come for the wine, stay for the expansive vineyard views set over rolling hills in Virginia horse country.

#3 Potomac Point Winery: Missing out on your international adventure this year? Replete with Tuscan charm, it’s easy to mistake the tasting room and bistro at Potomac Point for an Italian vineyard.

Hikes and Trails:

#1 Harpers Ferry: Channel your inner mountaineer at this scenic park that spans West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia, and that spotlights some more challenging climbs.

#2 Sugarloaf Mountain: Animal and plant lovers can expect a hefty dose of both when exploring this Maryland escape. For a more ambitious climb, you can scale nearly 1,300 feet to the summit of the mountain, or hike the relatively flat trails around it for a less rigorous undertaking.

#3 Bull Run Regional Park: This Northern Virginia Park has it all, including three different trails, picnic areas, a swimming pool, a playground, campgrounds, and a mini-golf course.

At Home

Don’t quite feel like venturing out just yet? I get it.

I also know from experience that there are plenty of ways to get into the summer spirit without leaving the comfort of home. Here are some ideas to get you started while you still have the chance!

  • Make your own homemade ice cream
  • Have a picnic
  • Set up an outdoor dinner date
  • Drink lemonade on your porch
  • Savor summery drinks — rosé anyone?
  • Fire up the grill
  • Dine alfresco
  • Make s’mores around a bonfire
