Best Vegan Restaurants in DC

Lifestyle

The way we see it, Vegans shouldn’t have to be stuck with a meager side salad as their main course when dining out. Luckily, DC restaurants are increasingly embracing all-plant meals that leave quite the impression — from Beyond Meat burgers and dairy-free soft serve to rutabaga fondue and Buffalo cauliflower (to name just a few). So, without further ado — dig into our list of the best Vegan spots around!

PLNT Burger (multiple locations): Celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn is now focusing on Beyond Meat burgers at his expansion-minded stall planted inside Whole Foods all over the DMV (plus one in Pennsylvania). PLNT Burger serves up plant patties to order and griddles them on a flattop. The burgers then get paired with crispy sides like Spanish onion “bloomies” and oat milk soft serve developed by Dolcezza Gelato. Order online for pickup or delivery.

Soupergirl: No meat? No problem. Sample Sara Polon’s entirely vegan (and kosher) menu plays up local ingredients with a mix of fresh soups in inventive varieties like lentil apricot and carrot dill. Souperfans can also spot Soupergirl products in local stores or order online.

Donut Run: Looking for a twist on this dynamic sweet treat? A vegan doughnut shop from self-trained bakers Shawn Petersen and Nicole Dao, Donut Run has brought some serious buzz to Takoma since its early 2021 opening. Customers who decide to brave the line can expect to be rewarded with plump, classic-looking rings and glazes in fun flavors like French toast or mango-coconut.

Oyster Oyster: Oyster Oyster chef Rob Rubba’s ever-changing prix fixe menu ($55 per person) celebrates in-season produce from small farms. His vegan mushroom cheesesteak slathered in a “whiz” made out of a buttery, roasted sunflower seed sauce also makes sporadic appearances.

The Plant Food Lab Incubator space will serve as the test site for new businesses selling versions of American drive-in food or New York-style deli sandwiches that vegans can eat. Order for takeout or delivery here.

Elizabeth’s Gone Raw: Elizabeth’s Gone Raw offers an upscale vegan dinner inside a historic townhome on Friday and Saturday nights. The multi-course meal ($85 per person) features vegan dishes like cauliflower mushroom cakes, while organic wine pairings are available for an additional $60.
