#1 Old City Farm & Guild: Want to know which plants will prosper on your south-facing balcony, what type of containers to buy for tomatoes, or how often to change your container soil? Head to Old City Farm & Guild on Rhode Island Avenue NW in Shaw. They have a variety of flowers, herbs, and vegetable seedlings to get your garden started, as well as bags of compost to help them to grow, and plenty of pots to pick from.
#2 American Plant: For 100 years, American Plant has served as a popular garden center for the DC area, offering organic, earth-friendly gardening solutions as well as a strong family legacy of quality service and personal attention. With two retail stores located in Bethesda and a Landscape/Design/Build/Maintain division, a Container Garden Design Service, and a Lifestyle Boutique — which offers indoor and outdoor containers, home décor, candles, and beauty products — American Plant has evolved into much more than a Garden Center. While maintaining the company’s core values, Brett, Erik, and Todd continue to expand the business and provide customers with something fresh each year.

#3 Ginkgo Gardens: Founded in 2000 by owner Mark Holler, Ginkgo Gardens serves as a lush oasis in the heart of bustling Capitol Hill. A full service garden center uniquely oriented to the urban gardener, Ginkgo Gardens offers high quality plants, flowers, garden products, and useful services. The team is built with passionate horticulturists and gardeners who can’t wait to lend a helping hand. At the end of the day, Ginkgo Gardens distinguishes itself by offering friendly services as well as unique statuary, ornamentation, and accessories not easily found elsewhere in the city.
#4 Greenstreet Gardens: In June 2000, Ray and Stacy Greenstreet purchased a greenhouse operation in Southern Anne Arundel County, Lothian, Maryland to grow some plants and raise their family. But their roots actually began back in the mid-seventies on a 65-acre farm that exists to this day. At that time, a small “rooting station” was established to grow plants for Ball Seed Company wholesale customers. As the years passed, neighbors and locals bought the extra plants for their gardens. Word-of-mouth referrals helped build the landscaper and homeowner side of the business. In the summer of 2000, the Greenstreets expanded the property to become the ever-evolving business of today. At present, Greenstreet Growers, Inc., home of Greenstreet Gardens, is a dynamic complex, located around the corner from Prince George’s and Calvert Counties.
#5 Homestead Gardens: Founded in 1973 by Don Riddle, Jr., this landmark nursery boasts the East Coast’s largest selection of high-quality annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs. They offer landscaping design, build service, outdoor lighting, garden accessories, casual furniture, gifts & decor, and much, much more!
