A Guide to Giving Back to the Community In DC

Lifestyle

As you already know, gratitude isn’t reserved just for the holiday season. At The Jenn Smira Team, we love finding new ways (and revisiting old ones) to show our enduring thanks for the place we call home — and we know you do too. Wondering how you can give back to the community in DC all year long? Keep reading for a list of organizations that could use your support this winter season and beyond!

#1 So Others Might Eat: For over 50 years, S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat) has been serving DC’s homeless community and those experiencing extreme poverty. This interfaith organization offers transitional housing, access to medical care, career training, and an open door policy to those who need basic needs met, like a hot shower, a meal, or food pantry items.

#2 A Wider Circle: A Wider Circle provides basic need items to families transitioning out of homelessness or leaving domestic abuse situations. Have baby essentials you want to get out of your house? A Wider Circle accepts strollers, high chairs, changing tables, Pack ‘n Plays, car seats, infant and toddler clothing, and cribs. Your donation could greatly improve the living conditions of our region’s most vulnerable families so they can start anew with dignity and hope.

Bikes for the World is a nonprofit humanitarian organization and volunteer network that collects thousands of used bicycles, as well as bike parts and tools, and delivers them to community programs around the world.

#5 Capital Area Food Bank: The Capital Area Food Bank is the anchor of the hunger relief infrastructure in our region, providing more than 45 million meals to people in communities across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. But they don’t stop there, because this team knows that creating long term solutions to hunger requires more than meals. It requires education, training, and opportunity. In short, it demands ideas that address the big picture. That’s why CAFB is approaching the problem in multiple ways: providing food for today, and addressing the root causes of hunger by partnering with organizations that provide critical services like job training programs and health care.

#6 Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School: Contributing to the Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School’s mission means helping to provide a fulfilling learning experience and long-lasting education for each and every one of their students.
