What’s The Best Pizza Place In DC?

Lifestyle

Under the impression that DC is all about history and politics? Think again: Pizza is one of the city’s most treasured traditions, and around here, where to find the best slice is as controversial as it is essential. From tried-and-true favorites to deep-dish aficionados and saucy newcomers on the scene, read on for your personal slice of pizza rivalry in DC today!

#1 2 Amys

Chefs, visitors, and locals alike can’t resist frequenting 2 Amys, endorsing an unpretentious family restaurant that remains the standard for Neapolitan pizza in the District. The visibly scorched, wood-fired pies have attracted obsessives for 20 years, and during the pandemic, the owner even installed a second pizza oven in the main dining room to fuel a seamless transition into takeout. But the beloved neighborhood spot near the National Cathedral has since welcomed regulars back on-site with indoor/patio dining (walk-ins only), and the reviews are in: this DC staple isn’t going anywhere.

#2 Slice & Pie

This NY and Detroit style slice hotspot offering quick slices and whole pies was just named one of the top 50 pizza places in the US. With pies made by Italian pizza master Giulio Adriani, the joint’s “biga” dough is made in house daily and fermented 3 days. Guests can also enjoy sandwiches, meatballs, garlic knots, beer, wine, and cocktails until as late as 3 AM come weekends!

#3 La Casina DC

Angela and her husband Fabrizio Costantini brought a slice of their native Rome to Eastern Market in 2021 with the opening of this Roman pinsa place. The menu specializes in cloud-like “pinsa” — a pizza that’s curiously crispy on the outside but super soft in the center. Favorites include its ultra-fresh Margherita built with umozzarella Fior di Latte, extra virgin olive oil, and fresh basil or a white La Porchetta pie livened up with truffle oil.

#4 We, The Pizza

Founded by the Mendelsohn family in 2010, We, The Pizza brings a slice of Italian-American culinary magic to Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. With over 14 unique pies served by the slice, this local gem offers something for every pizza lover. But it doesn’t stop at pizza—every morning, their homemade Italian gelato is freshly churned in-house, creating rich and creamy shakes that are the perfect sweet finish to any meal.

#5 Andy’s Pizza

The demand for the envelope-thin crust on this New York-style slice shop has quickly expanded since its debut in Tysons gallery. Andy’s can now be found in sizable Shaw digs, at Atlas Brew Works in Navy Yard, inside a NoMa apartment building, at the top of Adams Morgan’s nightlife corridor, and in Old Town Alexandria, Foggy Bottom, and Bethesda. The team sells 18-inch pies and individual slices in classic flavors along with specials like a popular white pie with mozzarella, provolone, roasted cremini mushrooms, and caramelized onions.

#6 All Purpose

Flavors from chef Mike Friedman’s New Jersey childhood get infused with new life on deck oven-baked crusts topped with ingredients spanning from hen-of-the-woods mushrooms to ‘nduja and capicola bacon. The original can be found in Shaw, and its waterfront sibling is in Navy Yard. Meanwhile, a casual offshoot called AP Pizza Shop brought deck-oven pies to Bethesda last month.

#8 Timber Pizza Company

In 2014, Andrew Dana and Chris Brady started Timber Pizza Company in their off-hours with a pizza oven, a ’67 Chevy pickup truck, and a deep love of dough. Enter Chef Dani Moreira, having just graduated from the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, and the Timber Fam was officially established. Today, Moreira works wonders with her wood-fired oven in the close quarters of this neighborhood spot in Petworth, producing specialty pies with ingredients like cured chorizo, beef bolognese, roasted sweet potatoes, and kale.

#9 Sonny’s Pizza

These square slices of grandma-style pie on focaccia-like crust are unlike anything else in the city. A pizza garden behind Sonny’s ’70s-style rec room style dining room in Park View offers an airy place to drink natural wines and large-format bottles of craft beer while savoring every bite.

#10 The Little Grand

Craving hot pizza, cold drinks, and warm people? That winning combination is what awaits guests of The Little Grand, a Little spot with the Grand aspiration of being your favorite pizza alley bar.
