Summer Adventures in DC

Lifestyle

As temperatures rise and COVID cases drop, we all have plenty of reasons to celebrate this summer. Luckily, DC is the perfect backdrop for our return to post-pandemic life. From tried-and-true excursions to shiny new diversions, check out this list of the DC adventures topping our summer bucket list this year. What are you waiting for? Get back out there!

Go on a winery or brewery tour

Some of the most refreshing wineries on the East Coast are a mere 30- to 45-minute drive away from DC in Virginia. Loudoun County, in particular, is home to a great many vineyards where you can learn about winemaking and sample some wines while exploring the vines. We’re especially fans of Walsh Family Wine and Carriage House Wineworks, both of which are part of the Virginia Governor’s Cup Gold Medal Trail. If wine isn’t your thing, there are also a number of great breweries in DC and just outside the city as well, like Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery or Vanish Farmwoods Brewery.

Visit the museums

This just in: museums are back. What does that mean for you? Hours upon hours of educational, illuminating, and largely free fun. Whether you’re into art history, natural history, or the history of the United States, there’s a museum for you. Taking a stroll around a museum or simply finding a seat in the National Portrait Gallery’s airy atrium can be a great activity, especially when strolling around outside gets to be a bit too…oppressive, thanks to that good old DC humidity we all know and love.

Cool off on the water

Looking to beat the heat this summer? You’ve come to the right place, especially since DC has several waterfronts to choose from. Rent a kayak and hone your tandem paddling skills, or grab a drink and watch the sunset over one of the rivers. If you’re at the Wharf, take in the views from La Vie or new sushi joint NaRa-Ya, or grab some cupcakes from Baked and Wired for a sweet treat when in Georgetown. Navy Yard goers can delight in a glass of wine from District Winery or a fine dining experience at Albi. No matter which waterfront you choose, you’re sure to find an adventure that aims to please.

Revisit the bars and restaurants reopening

When our favorite neighborhood spots started to shutter their doors last winter, many thought they were closing for good. As it turns out, though, DC’s resilience knows no bounds — especially when it comes to our penchant for quality food and drink. Check out this running list to see if and when your go-to mainstay is slated to make its comeback.

Take (yourself) out to the ball game

Although you would never have known it from the past year’s events, DC is a sports town — especially when that first pitch is thrown on opening day. The good news? There’s plenty of opportunity to make up for lost time this year by cheering on your favorite home team. Head over to Navy Yard to root for the Nationals, and grab some delicious food-to-go from La Famosa or Bammy’s along with a cold brew from Atlas Brew Works or Bluejacket while you’re at it.
