DC Dog Parks To Treat Your Furry Friend(s)!

Lifestyle

Even if you’ve already got your own summer bucket list all mapped out, there’s still plenty of time (and sunshine) to curate one for your pets, too! And since DC just so happens to be a city brimming with green space, there’s a seemingly endless number of dog parks to choose from.

To help you narrow it down, we’ve put together a list of some of the best parks in the city so you can treat your furry friends to a well-deserved adventure close to home!

#1 Shaw Dog Park: The Shaw Neighborhood Improvement Association (SNIA) opened the Shaw Dog Park back in August of 2003. The concept? To provide a safe and secure place for pets to socialize and exercise, to enhance city living, and bring community members together. 19 years later, it’s clear that mission was accomplished.

Facilities: The dog park itself is 15,000 square feet, and there’s an enclosure for small dogs (under 25 pounds), senior dogs, and physically-challenged dogs. There’s also an additional, larger area for active pups to play and double gates to make sure there are no accidental escapes.

#2 Langdon Dog Park: This 11,500 square-foot off-leash dog park features spaces for both small and large dogs and two dog water fountains. The surface, composed of decomposed granite, is both durable and permeable. Earthern berms that surround the dog park control excesssive water runoff by diverting stormwater away from the storm-drain, allowing it to percolate slowly into the soil instead of flooding the storm sewer.

#3 Newark Street Dog Park: Newark Street Dog Park was designed for the enjoyment of dogs and people alike. The Dog Park is located in the sunny southwest corner of the Newark Street Park complex, just beyond the children’s playground. The Dog Park is accessible via the stairs from 39th Street, and via the ADA-compliant gravel path from Newark Street.

Amenities include:

• 2 Separate play areas for big and little dogs
• Eco-friendly crushed decomposed granite surface
• 4 Benches including 2 under a shaded pergola
• Refreshing water fountains
• 3 Waste disposal stations with poop scoop bags
• All the tennis balls you can fetch!

#4 Bundy Dog Park: Bundy Dog Park is a fenced-in park where dog owners can bring their dogs to play and socialize off-leash. The park, which opened on April 7, 2012, is open to all, and provides a safe space to raise healthy, well-tempered dogs in an urban environment. Of course, the fact that it brings together members of the community doesn’t hurt, either.

#5 Lansburgh Dog Park: At Lansburgh, there are two fully fenced spaces where pooches of all shapes, sizes, and breeds can frolic, run, and play — all without the need for a lead. That’s right; Lansburgh Dog Park is a leash-free zone with play areas for both small and large pups to enjoy. The runs are loaded with all of the things Fido could need to make his day at the park complete, including drinking water, water bowls, and cleanup bags. You’ll even find benches where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful DC sun!
